Lake Region Hockey started in the late 1950s when Shoreview Mayor Dick Wedell and Mounds View High School Head Coach Tom Wegleitner responded to the need for a competitive youth hockey program. Community members and high school hockey players took responsibility for building and flooding outdoor rinks (at parks such as Sitzer and Bobby Theisen), where all practices were held and games were played.
The operating division of Lake Region Hockey split in 1993. Irondale Youth Hockey and Mounds View Youth Hockey now service the footprints of their respective high schools. Lake Region Hockey continues to serve its original footprint as a fundraising organization.
