History

Lake Region Hockey started in the late 1950s when Shoreview Mayor Dick Wedell and Mounds View High School Head Coach Tom Wegleitner responded to the need for a competitive youth hockey program. Community members and high school hockey players took responsibility for building and flooding outdoor rinks (at parks such as Sitzer and Bobby Theisen), where all practices were held and games were played.

The operating division of the Lake Region Hockey Association split in 1993 to form Irondale Youth Hockey and Mounds View Youth Hockey while Lake Region continued on as the fundraising partner. Mounds View and Irondale are now back together again as the Mounds View Irondale Youth Hockey Association. The MVI Hockey Foundation rebranded accordingly and continues its fundraising mission.
